The number of anti-Muslim prejudiced incidents has been high for years now. In 2020, a total of 1,129 Islamophobic hate crimes were officially recorded in Germany. It can be assumed that many anti-Muslim prejudiced incidents are not registered and prosecuted formally.

According to a Europe-wide survey (EU-MIDIS Survey II), the number of Islamophobic discrimination has increased in all EU countries compared to 2008.

Half of the survey respondents experienced discrimination in the housing market, the job market, or the healthcare system because of their name, skin color, or origin.

One in four Muslims experienced hostility due to their perceived migration background.

One in three Muslims experienced hostility and police control because of their religious or traditional clothing, while the numbers among those who were not visibly recognizable as Muslims were lower.

Hostility towards Muslims is also increasing in Austria. In 2020, the Documentation-Centre on Islamophobia and Anti-Muslim Racism recorded 1402 incidents, which is 350 incidents more than in the previous year.

Experts estimate the number of unreported anti-Muslim prejudiced incidents to be far higher than the official statistics – this is where I Report comes in. We aim to shed more light on these unreported incidents by recording them, thereby making anti-Muslim attacks and discrimination visible.
